Cloud saves

Back up emulator and web game saves to Walrus from Rare OS, encrypted with a key from your Rare Wallet, and restore them on any device.

Steam games keep their saves in Steam Cloud, so your progress follows you between Rare OS, a Steam Deck and your PC. Rare OS adds cloud saves for everything else: emulator saves and web game saves.

Rare packs a save set on the device, encrypts it with a key only your wallet can make, and stores it on Walrus. Your wallet pays for the storage. Restore works on any device signed in to the same account.

Nothing runs in the background. Every backup and every restore starts when you press the button for that save set, and every payment goes through Rare Wallet's review.

Open Cloud saves

  • Home, the On Sui row, Cloud saves.
  • Your profile, Cloud saves.

You need a Rare Wallet account that can sign. See Rare Wallet.

What is backed up

Rare looks for saves on this device and lists each set it finds, with its size, when it changed and when it was last backed up.

EmulatorSave sets
RetroArchSave files, save states
RPCS3Save files
PCSX2Memory cards, save states
CemuSave files
DuckStationMemory cards, save states
Dolphin and PrimeHackGameCube saves, Wii saves
PPSSPPSave files, save states
RyujinxSave files
Azahar, Lime3DS and CitraSave files
Vita3KSave files
FlycastVMU saves
ScummVMSave files

Flatpak installs of these emulators are found too, along with EmuDeck's Emulation folder. Each web game you play in Rare OS has its own save set.

Unlock your save key

The first time, Cloud saves shows Locked. Press Unlock and approve one signature in Rare Wallet. It costs nothing, it is not a transaction, and the key never leaves this device.

How you approve depends on your account:

AccountApproval
PasskeyYour phone or security key
Recovery phrase or private keyYour PIN
Ledger or KeystoneA message signed on the device

The key is the same for your account on every device, so a new handheld signed in to the same account opens the same backups. Nobody else can open them.

Back up

  1. Choose how long to keep it

Press X to switch between 30 days, 90 days, 6 months and 1 year. The On this device list shows what each set costs to keep that long, in WAL, and the top of the screen shows the total for everything plus the SUI fees.

  2. Press Back up on a save set

Rare packs and encrypts the set.

  3. Approve twice in Rare Wallet

The first approval pays for the storage. Rare then uploads the backup, and the second approval confirms it.

Your account needs WAL for the storage and a little SUI for the fees. You can swap for WAL in Trade.

Walrus sells storage in two-week periods, so the time you get is rounded up to the next full period. The Last backup column shows how many days are left.

Restore

  • On this device: press Restore on a save set, then press it again to confirm.
  • From another device: backups of sets that are not on this device yet show under From your other devices. Press Restore here, then press it again.

Restoring never deletes what is there. Your current saves are moved aside to a folder next to them whose name starts with .rare-before-restore-, and the toast says which one.
